I know a lot of people are freaked out by it, but I can't wait to check out the Bodies Revealed exhibit. Call it morbid fascination if you want, but it's really cool. I saw a similar exhibit before, and it was fascinating. Bodies are the one thing we can all relate to, after all. :)

I did something brilliant at work (yeah, right) and my boss gave me KC Royals baseball tickets as a thank you. The game was great, it was cool to see the stadium renovations, and the Royals beat the Indians.

Outlook for 2007

Looking like we'll have a rookie at quarterback, which screams "lackluster performance" for the coming season...the plus side is a solid support network - of course, all eyes will be on the offensive line. With one of the best running backs in football, and an excellent tight end, there may not be too much reason for pessimism. Ultimately, the Chiefs have to improve on the road if they are to make any kind of real playoff bid...with four road games to end the season, it will be important to start the road season on a good foot.

The Chiefs preseason schedule is highlighted by a nationally-televised Thursday night contest on ESPN with the Miami Dolphins at Arrowhead Stadium on August 16th at 7:00 PM (Central). The Chiefs will also host the New Orleans Saints at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, August 23rd at 7:30 PM (Central).

The Chiefs will open their 2007 preseason slate with a road game at Cleveland on Saturday, August 11th. Kansas City will conclude its preseason schedule with the 2007 installment of the Governor’s Cup series with the Rams at St. Louis on Thursday, August 30th. All times and dates are subject to change. Times for the Chiefs two road preseason games will be finalized at a later date.

It brought tears to so many's eyes, including my own. NFL Commisioner Paul Tagliabue says of Mr. Hunt "He was one of the most considerate, one of the most thoutghful, and one of the most visionary people you could ever deal with" I personally thank him for the contributions he made to the sport. It is sad to see someone who really wanted to make fans happy gone. It makes me wonder when we will see the next Lamar Hunt and makes me hope that it is not too far away. My last couple of blogs have praised to him for his accomlpishments and now I give praise for him. For what he accomplished and for those he leaves behind. May some of his spirit live on in each of us, it would make the world a better place. He listened from the Dallas hospital to the first Thanksgiving Game, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs against the Denver Broncos, to not be played in only Dallas or Detroit but right from his hometurf in more than 3 decades. He listened as the Big 12 game matching the Oklahoma Sooners against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. We listen for him now. Lamar Hunt, 1932-2006.

Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City's own Arrowhead Stadium played host to the Big 12 championship game where The Oklahoma Sooners took on The Nebraska Cornhuskers and came away with the big V. Nebraska had a lot riding on this match since the Cornhuskers have not made the title game appearance since 6 years earlier. Head Coach Bill Callahan apologized to Cornhusker fans for his performance in the game. He would not specify any particular plays in the 21-7 loss against the Sooners simply stating, "I was dissapointed in everything I did". So were fans. But the blame cannot be laid entirely on the coach. The Cornhuskers out yarded the Sooners but did allow 5 turnovers. Once the score got to 14-0 things looked desperate as the Nebraskan boys abandonded thier strong run game throwing at one point 20 back to back passing plays.

After losing to the Cleveland Browns the Kansas City Chiefs are back in a familiar territory, no margin for error with a wild card spot fast fading. That is what it takes, it seems, for the KC boys to play at the top of thier game. If the defense could stop crumbling in the final minutes on the road, then there could be some post season action for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Gift

The Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt, is currently battling health issues in a Dallas hospital while teams battle each other on the turf of The Arrowhead Stadium. Hunt has campaigned for several years for furthering the stadiums at which holiday games are played from and it paid off as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos in Arrowhead Stadium on Thanksgiving evening. Formerly only Dallas and Detroit were in that listing. He has also pushed hard to get college ball to become prevelant in his community. It is Hunt, and the Chiefs ballclub that have fought hard to bring big college games to the stadium and thus big fans as well. Only by thier dime and thier hard toiling did they land The Big 12 Championship game to be played there December 2, 2006.

I would like to ask you to take some time out of your busy day today and think of Mr. Lamar Hunt. Pray for him or send him telepathic well wishes, anything. A man who struggled so hard to further football is sick and missing everything he has accomplished.

Green to be back on the field for the Chiefs

It is very welcome news that Trent Green is slated to quarterback the Kansas City Chiefs against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Not that his sub, Damon Huard, hasn't done an able job of stepping in for him. I'm just happy that Trent is up and about after the blow he took back in September that left him unconscious on the field.

Green had suffered a debilitating injury before, back in 1999, when he was getting ready to lead the St. Louis Rams. His replacement that time, Kurt Warner, showed his stuff and kept the position, all the way to the Super Bowl. Still, I doubt the main reason he wants back on the field is to hang onto his job; guys at this level of competition want to shine. Which is hard to do from the sidelines.

Just the same, coming back from a head injury is not the same as coming back from a knee injury. I think the Chiefs fans are more nervous than Trent is!

Show Me a Winner!

The Kansas City Chiefs took it to the St. Louis Rams at the so-called Show-Me Bowl at Edward Jones Dome yesterday. The Rams’ Marc Bulger had over 350 yards, mostly passing, in fact, mostly passing to Steven Jackson, who had a career-high 133 yards receiving. But they spent most of the game trying to overcome turnovers and the damage they did early on. In the end, the Rams had a lot of impressive numbers, but our Chiefs had the ones that count: Kansas City 31, St. Louis 17.

KC Chiefs' Tynes gets a do-over

We were looking so good in the first half against the San Diego Chargers, except for a couple of things Lawrence Tynes did, or rather, didn't do. He missed and extra point and a field goal, and in the fourth the Chargers managed to tie things up. Lucky for Tynes, and all us Chiefs fans, we got our hands on the ball again in the last 33 seconds. Down to the final six seconds, it was all up to him to make the longest kick of his career -- 53 yards -- and he did it.

Nice to have it happen against the Chargers, too, because it bumps us up to within a game of them in the AFC West.

Whose Streak Ends Today?

I hope not the Kansas City Chiefs' since we've had a couple of wins in a row. But we're up against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Pittsburgh, and I have a feeling they are more sick of their 3 losses in a row than we are propelled by our 2 wins. The Steelers are the reigning Super Bowl champs, too. Which was not a complete fluke.

Uh-oh! We interrupt this blog to check the score. 31 to 0 at the half, and not in our favor. I think I'd rather not watch this; I need to go online and look for tickets to see the Chiefs take on the San Diego Chargers here next week!

Kansas City Chiefs Romp Over San Francisco 49ers

Now this is the way to end a winless streak -- 41 to nothing! Everything seemed to click into place finally for our Chiefs. One of the things I liked the best was our defense. They kept the lid on San Francisco both on the ground and in the air. If it had been some other team and not the 49ers, I might have started feeling sorry for their quarterback (Alex Smith) getting sacked five times. But prior to this game, San Francisco had been dishing out the sacks to everybody else, so what's wrong with a little payback.

I'd love to have tickets to our next game, a) to go check out the brand new Cardinals Stadium in Glendale, AZ, and b) to see if the Kansas City Chiefs can model the next game after this one!

I have been following the rebuilding progress in New Orleans consistently since the event occurred. A lot of people are torn within themselves over the issue. No one can say for sure if rebuilding is a good idea considering the increased severity of the summer storms over the years and our fear that the trend has only begun to rear its ugly head. Most people feel we have a responsibility to rebuild and adapt to the changing conditions like the island people who were displaced by the tsunami. They feel New Orleans is an important part of our history and national identity and that it is important to keep it alive.

I see both sides but feel we may be smart to pull our ports north up the river where people can live safely or create a solid all-encompassing emergency plan for evacuating the danger zone cities well before any hurricane makes landfall.

Where will Herman Edwards lead the Chiefs?

Our best move in the draft may have been picking up quarterback Brodie Croyle from Alabama, and we'll have some time to groom him, since Trent Green and our offensive line, including Willie Roaf and Will Shields, will be back in place. It will be interesting to see how everybody adapts to Herman Edwards as head coach. I hear defense is his strong suit. Uh, the Chiefs could use a bit of that, and it would be really nice to see it this year before some of our seasoned veterans start being described as over-the-hill.

No New Hat for Arrowhead

The Kansas City Chiefs have withdrawn their bid for the 2015 Super Bowl to be held at Arrowhead Stadium. It looks like the plans for a rolling roof will not go forward and the stadium will not be climate controlled which is a requirement for hosting the event. Oh well. I can’t blame them for not spending my tax dollars to make costly renovations. They say the renovations that are being made will be designed to fit a roof in the future if the motion ever succeeds politically.

Chiefs Snag Quentin Griffin

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that running back Quentin Griffin will be joining the Chiefs next season. Griffin was a Denver Bronco for the first two seasons of his NFL career. He played in 16 games and racked up some impressive stats in that short time. He was just as impressive in his years at the University of Oklahoma. I think he will be a great addition to our offense.

Chiefs Fan on the Super Bowl

Even though I was disappointed the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t make it, I still watched the Super Bowl. I thought it was an absolute travesty. The officiating was bad throughout the entire game. The Pittsburgh Steelers won but didn’t do anything amazing enough for me to say they looked like the better team.

We Could Have Gone Far

We had a 10-6 record and didn’t make the Playoffs. I felt we played like a playoff caliber team but I guess it wasn’t enough. I am hoping to see the Steelers beat the Broncos and Seattle beats the Carolina Panthers. Pittsburgh and the Seahawks in the Super Bowl will be an exciting match up.

Herm Edwards Named Chiefs Head Coach

The Kansas City Chiefs are welcoming a new head coach this week. The President announced that Herm Edwards has been named for the position and becomes the tenth head coach in franchise history. The Chiefs organization feels like Edwards is the most qualified man for the job. His record in the NFL includes taking his teams to the playoffs and a host of winning records. They have said he is a man of integrity and has admirable family values. All around Herm Edwards sounds like a great man and a coach who can take this team to higher places.

Vikings Send off Vermeil in Style

Dick Vermeil announced his retirement on Sunday after fifteen seasons in the NFL. It was a good end for him as the Kansas City Chiefs dominated the Bengals 37-3. Vermeil got really chocked up when he talked to the press after the game about how proud he was of his team and said he feels they have shown they deserve to advance to the playoffs. The Chiefs win over the Bengals was the perfect way to send their coach a message that his legacy will live on even though they didn’t get into the playoffs. There were so many good teams this year that you really couldn’t predict who would go and I believe the Chiefs made a valiant effort.

Chiefs Still in the Running for Playoffs

The Chiefs beat the San Diego Chargers on Saturday with a score of 20-7. We will remain in the running for a playoff spot. Our star running back Larry Johnson had his eighth game with over 100 yards rushing against the Chargers and scored two touchdowns in the process. Racking up those kinds of numbers against the number one rated run defense in the league is really impressive and makes Johnson my pick for MVP of the game. Dick Vermeil has said he feels the Chiefs played like a club that deserves to make the playoffs. I don’t want to jinx the Chiefs but I strongly agree with him and see us advancing pretty far in the post season.

Giants Rule at Giants Stadium

The Chiefs suffered a loss at Giants Stadium on Sunday and are going to be feeling the pain for a long time if they can’t win the next two games. There are way too many teams with pretty good records this season and not as many playoff spots. Trent Green had some flashes of brilliance early in the game and tied the score once at 10-10. Our offense just couldn’t out score the Giants and our defense wasn’t effective after their perfect first quarter. We even got on the scoreboard before the Giants but Eli Manning is not a man you can keep down for long and he showed us that in the second quarter.

Chiefs Headed for New York

The possibility of playing in the post season got a little less likely after the Kansas City Chiefs loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Although our rivals were also beaten this weekend, everything is still really up in the air and could go either way. I am not sure however, that we could get anything going if we faced a team like the Indianapolis Colts in the Playoffs. We still have to face the same New York Giants that completely shut down the Cowboys. San Diego and Cincinnati don’t pose the same challenge but are formidable opponents we will need to prepare for if we want the division.

When we beat the Texans no one thought twice about it because they are the worst team in the league. When won our game against the Patriots everyone said it was because they were not the team they used to be. Now the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos and I want to hear some cheering. A three game winning streak capped of by a win over the best defense in the league is something nobody can excuse away. This is our win through and through. We matched the Broncos score for score and fought through their defensive wall over and over. We are the first team to get any kind of running game going against the Broncos. People will be talking about Arrowhead Stadiums battle of the titans for years to come.

Chiefs Show Patriots Who’s Boss

Our Kansas City Chiefs won their game against the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots team. The Chiefs came out with bold strategy and a fire that couldn’t be extinguished. Our defense gave us four interceptions and the offense offered up over four hundred yards. Trent Green looked great out there and made some fine plays from inside the pocket. Green passed for one touchdown and a total of 323 yards. Kansas City used many weapons against Tom Brady, the most effective of which was our relentless pass rush. Brady was completing just over fifty percent of his passes and threw four interceptions making this his second-worst career loss.

The Chiefs put their best foot forward and beat a Super Bowl contender. Next weeks game against the Denver Broncos won’t be a picnic but the Chiefs are ready after their inspiring show of skill and determination against the Patriots.

Chiefs’ Future Looks Scary

The Kansas City Chiefs met the Houston Texans on Sunday for the win 45-17. Losing to the Bills last week had us in real trouble. Winning this game against the poor Texans really bolsters our chances. Unfortunately it doesn’t do anything to lighten our schedule for the next couple of weeks. We are facing the Patriots, the Denver Broncos, the Cowboys, and the New York Giants in that order. The Chiefs are really going to have to pull it together to beat any one of those teams. They are nothing like the hapless Texans who have lost all but one game this season. They have the best records in the NFL, not to mention their top ranked defenses and killer stats at the quarterback position. We have to work on our defense if we are going to stand a chance against any of these top teams.

Buffalo Curse Stays Active

Last Sunday’s win over the Oakland Raiders was stellar. Coach Dick Vermeil had his Chiefs fired up from the start of the game. We pulled it off in the final seconds of the game and it was the most exciting moment of the season thus far our loss to the Buffalo Bills however was not at all satisfying. For some reason we have a bad record playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Bills always seem to keep us practically scoreless as they did in this 14-3 loss. Larry Johnson even got 132 yards rushing without ever getting into the endzone. We came out fighting and couldn’t convert for the rest of the game. Will we ever break our dismal record against the Buffalo Bills?

Kansas City Chiefs Lose to Denver

Denver Broncos scored a 17-to-nothing lead in the first quarter that made it hard for the Chiefs to come back. The final score was 30-10. Rod Smith of the Denver Broncos reached a milestone in NFL history--the first un-drafted player to reach over 10,000 yards receiving.

Kansas City’s next game will be against the Philadelphia Eagles at home; this will be a good game for the Chiefs. Both teams having the same record at 2-1 for the season, the Kansas City Chiefs would like to redeem themselves after their last game. The game will be in the early evening. So don’t miss it!

Kansas City Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders in California 23-17. The Kansas City Chiefs are looking good this year. Starting 2-0 for the season is a good way to get a jumpstart to get into the playoffs. The next game we will see them in is on Monday night against the Denver Broncos in Denver. This should be an easy win for the Chiefs, since the Broncos have got out on a slow start. I want to say that the Chiefs will come out ahead by 13 points. So don’t forget to watch Monday Night Football coming up on September 26.

Kansas City Chiefs fans should be excited for this season, beating the New York Jets 27-7 in their season opener. With their defense stepping up to the Plate, keeping the New York Jets only to 7 points in the 4th quarter. Now here is a name we will be mentioning all through the season: Derrick Johnson--having 8 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. This guy is going to light up the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense. This will be a very exciting team to watch this year, and if I lived in the Chiefs’ territory I’d be at the game because this season is looking good. New Blood

It was a good pick up this off-season when the Chiefs picked up Kendrell Bell from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The middle linebacker was sitting out most of the mini-camps with a pulled groin and is back in action. Bell was released by the Steelers due to him be prone to injury. The Chiefs hope that phase is over and are hoping he leads their defense in this upcoming season.

NFL Europe: Rich Scanlon

LB Rich Scanlon, who has been participating in the NFLEL (National Football League Europe), has been awarded the NFLEL Defensive Player of the Week. This is the second time that Scanlon has received this honor for his wicked performance on the defensive side.

Scanlon, part of the Berlin Thunder, has been leading the team in sacks all season. He has assisted the team in keeping the best record in the league (6-2). As of now, he has stacked up 75 tackles (58 solo), 3.0 sacks (-18.0 yards), four passes defensed and a forced fumble.

The Chiefs have plenty of work to do at linebacker in their offseason practices. They must not only begin the process of identifying their three best players but also find their best positions. The tentative starters are Kendrell Bell and Derrick Johnson on the outside and Kawika Mitchell in the middle, but Bell could eventually wind up moving inside if the Chiefs determine that's his best position. The Chiefs will be careful not to rush Johnson, their first-round draft pick, but he will also be difficult to dislodge. Keyaron Fox and James Grigsby will receive long looks and could push for playing time. Shawn Barber and Scott Fujita would also be in the playing mix, but they will miss the offseason work because they are mending after surgeries. . . .

Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham will call his signals from the sideline on game day rather than from the press box. The change is designed to boost the sagging morale of a unit beaten down after several lousy seasons more than to expedite adjustments. But the sometimes volatile Cunningham needs to keep his emotions in check, or the Chiefs risk having too much of a good thing.

Kansas City’s second choice during the draft was at the position of punter with the choice of Dustin Colquitt. This pick was placed late in the third round at 35(99th overall). Colquitt averaged 40.8 yards per punt and he placed 17 of his 26 punts inside the opponent's 20-yardline in 2004. Colquit originates from Knoxville, Tennessee and decided to go to Tennessee for college, where he started for the 2001-2004 seasons.

Extreme Makeover: Football Edition

Battle lines are being drawn for the wide receiving spots. The top three spots belong to starters Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison and slot receiver Dante Hall, assuming the Chiefs don't release Morton in June for salary cap purposes. One of the remaining game-day slots will go to either Samie Parker or rookie Craphonzo Thorpe. They are similar players. Both are fast and capable of stretching the field and giving the Chiefs a downfield threat. The other will go to either Marc Boerigter or Darrell Hill. Boerigter is the better receiver, but he is coming off a knee injury that cost him all of last season. Hill is the better special teams player. McCleon can better use his instincts and intelligence there and will get more help from linebackers and safeties in coverage. The shortest of the Chiefs veteran cornerbacks at 5-10, McCleon also won't get as many matchups with bigger, taller receivers.

In the first round of picks, the Kansas City Chiefs chose linebacker Derrick Johnson from the University of Texas. The club might be wise to select as many defensive prospects as possible to fortify a roster short on good young defensive players. It is certain to emerge from the draft with at least one linebacker and probably more. The Chiefs would love to get Texas' Derrick Johnson, but that's unlikely. Virginia's Darryl Blackstock would make a lot of sense in the second round, if not the first. Blackstock's pass-rushing skills would help immensely. The team also might look for a defensive end such as LSU's Marcus Spears or Wisconsin's Erasmus James. It also could look for a cornerback in the opening round if Surtain isn't acquired. Auburn's Carlos Rogers has the size and skills to play the bump-and-run coverage favored by coordinator Gunther Cunningham. If the Chiefs don't go for Rogers or another corner in the first round, Virginia Tech's Eric Green is a possibility later. Green probably wouldn't be able to start immediately, but he could play nickel back. The Chiefs likely will take at least one wide receiver, perhaps as early as the second or third round. UAB's Roddy White is an intriguing prospect because of his speed. The club also could be tempted by several other receivers in the second or third rounds, including Georgia's Reggie Brown and Oklahoma's Mark Bradley. Defensive depth will continue to be a priority on the second day. The team also will look for athletes who can play on special teams. The Chiefs need a punter and might choose Tennessee's Dustin Colquitt on the second day.

Brian Allen

The Washington Redskins have just recently acquired Brian Allen, formerly part of the Carolina Panthers. Allen, joining as a free agent linebacker, will add some power to their special teams.

Allen was originally inducted into the NFL being drafted by the St. Louis Rams. After one season with the Rams, he moved briefly to the Texans and then spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He began his career at Florida State.

Trent Green recently took part in a panel that discussed “Celebrating Civic Engagement” in the Pierson Auditorium. This event was held by “Students in the City,” an organization developed in the past few years by the UMKC.

The Chiefs have been one of the league's most prolific offensive teams the last three years, so don't look for many changes in their strategy. They will continue to attack opposing defenses, attempt to put them on their heels and then take advantage. The Chiefs would prefer to get more production from their wide receivers, but unless they are able to draft one who can produce immediately, that may not be achieved. The speedy Samie Parker is capable of giving the Chiefs more big plays downfield, but he may not be ready for a full-time role.

The Prez starting a New Term

President Carl Peterson has decided to stay on as the team’s president for another four years. He is starting a new term. His contract was set to expire with the 2005 season but has been extended to 2009.

This new contract will carry through his 21st season with the organization. Such stability is unusual in the front office of an NFL team and is a big plus for the football fans of Mid-America. Peterson is entering his 17th season with the Chiefs. He began his vocation with the franchise in December of 1988. During his time with the team, the Chiefs have come in first or second in the AFC West 11 times.

The Chiefs will have to draft a linebacker with their first pick in the draft. They couldn't line up at linebacker if the season began today. The Chiefs have only four serious roster candidates under contract and all have issues. Shawn Barber probably won't be ready for the start of the season because of a knee injury, Maslowski is trying to make a comeback and Mitchell and Keyaron Fox have been slow to develop. One of last year's starters, Scott Fujita, is a restricted free agent, but another team might make a run at him if the Chiefs overextended themselves in free agency.

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking forward to the possibility of innovation. This innovation is in terms of team turnaround. How best to do this? Get a bunch of exceptional additions.

With free agency terms unfolding, the Chiefs are beginning to host interviews with prospective clientele. Most recently at Arrowhead Stadium headquarters, a trio of players including Samari Rolle, Edgerton Hartwell, and Jeremiah Trotter stopped to make a visit. Hartwell and Trotter are on free agency status. Rolle was waived from the Titans due to a salary cap move.

Good luck to the Chiefs on acquiring the right players.

Hard Truth: The Chiefs have pressing needs on defense, but they would be making a mistake to ignore their situation at wide receiver. Starters Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison are over 30, Marc Boerigter is coming off knee surgery and Dante Hall's production as a receiver decreased. Samie Parker and Chris Horn had nice debut seasons, but the Chiefs should bring in a veteran or draft a rookie capable of competing for playing time.

Inside Dish: The return of quarterbacks coach Terry Shea after one season with the Bears and the move of Jason Verduzco to tight ends coach should benefit the Chiefs in a couple of ways. Trent Green is more comfortable working with Shea and his rough start to the 2004 season could be attributed to his absence. Verduzco, meanwhile, is well versed in the passing game and should help the tight ends in that area. The specialty of former tight ends coach Keith Rowen was in the blocking area.

Hungriest Player of the Yr

Priest Holmes, former Texas Longhorn, has been announced as the Snickers Hungriest Player of the year. This award goes to a most valuable player who had a spectacular game during a Monday Night Football game. This award was given to Brett Favre last year but falls into the hands of Holmes because of his phenomenal performance during the Chiefs vs. Ravens game on October 3rd.

During the game, Holmes stacked up 125 rushing yards and two touchdowns against a defense that had not let anyone stack up more than 100. Holmes shut down a streak that had been running for the Ravens.

Along with the honor, the Snickers Hungriest Player is awarded $10,000, which will go to Holmes’ own personal charitable foundation, Team Priest. Holmes’ father will be heading up the banquet after his own tour around Iraq. Herman Morris, Holmes’ father, is a master sergeant in the U.S. army reserve.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Finalist – Derrick Thomas

Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs has been selected as one of fifteen finalists to be awarded the dignity of being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Thomas, an eleven year member of Chiefs, passed away in a car crash at the age of 33. He would have had a few more miraculous seasons of play.

Thomas had extreme presence on and off the field. He stacked up 126.5 sacks through his history with the Chiefs. This brought him to being ranked fourth highest total produced by a linebacker and tenth in NFL history. He also still holds the position of most sacks in a single game.

The choice will be announced Saturday, February 5th. Rest in peace Derrick.

The 2005 schedule is known in opponents-only nature right now, but already coach Dick Vermeil is lamenting that his team -- the No. 3 finisher in the AFC West -- got no breaks from the schedule making system next year.

Vermeil, who readily admits that his '99 Rams benefited tremendously from a weak schedule in their Super Bowl campaign, cites a more difficult schedule as one reason for his team's decline to 7-9 this year. Kansas City played seven games against five playoff contenders this year -- the same number it drew in '05 after drawing New England, the Jets, Philadelphia and divisional opponents San Diego and Denver.

The Chiefs will play host to the Patriots, Jets, Eagles, Washington and Cincinnati while playing at Buffalo, Miami, Dallas, the Giants and Houston.

Quarterback Trent Green has been voted by his teammates the Derrick Thomas Award winner for the second straight year as the team's Most Valuable Player and defensive end Jared Allen , whose nine sacks fell just one short of tying Thomas' rookie team record, was voted the Mack Lee Hill Award as the team's outstanding rookie.

Green, in the most statistically productive season of his 11-year career, set team passing records for passing yards (4,591), completions (369) and 300-yard passing games (eight). The Chiefs ran up 6,695 total yards -- the fifth-highest total in NFL history.

For only the second time in 15 years, the Chiefs will not raise ticket or parking prices after their 7-9 season, the team's fourth losing campaign (and fifth non-winning one) in the past seven years. The last time they declined to raise prices was 1998, a 7-9 campaign that led to the resignation of Marty Schottenheimer .

This will give us an oppurtunity to redeem ourselves or just the opposite. If we can put together a more solid team next year, then I truely believe that we can have an outstanding season next year. We will definatley have to work on turnovers, which ahs been determining factors in more than 1 of our games. Lets see if we cant whip a better season together next year. Go Chiefs!

Christmas Leftovers

DANTE’S WORLD

While driving around last week trying to finish up the Christmas shopping I punched up a couple of the local sports talk shows. One day, the subject of discussion centered on how the Chiefs were going to improve their defense in 2005. Certainly, that’s a valid area for plenty of give and take. One of the tin-throat hosts suggested that offensive talent needs to be traded away to get defensive help. One of his suggestions was to deal away Dante Hall.

I’ve heard lame-brain ideas before, but that has to rank among the worst. First, trading player-for-player rarely happens in the NFL and it’s even more unusual for it to happen at a level where the players are considered top talents. Secondly, Dante Hall is one of the NFL’s greatest weapons as a kick and punt returner. The Chiefs can continue attempts to involve him more in the offense, but that’s really not as important as having him back returning punts and kickoffs.

In any given game, there are going to be anywhere from a half-dozen to a dozen return opportunities. On every single one of those plays, Hall could end up in the end zone. He’s a game-breaker and that’s not something every franchise has. Should you be one of those teams fortunate enough to have a guy like Dante Hall, you don’t get rid of him.

COVERING TONY G.

Sometimes, coaches out-coach themselves. That’s what the Raiders defensive staff did when it came to covering Tony Gonzalez. The first time the teams met, Oakland double teamed Gonzalez on nearly every snap. Sometimes, they did that with cornerback Charles Woodson. Always, they had bracket coverage, somebody short and somebody deep on the Chiefs tight end. That’s why he caught just three passes for 32 yards.

On Christmas Day, Woodson did not play. Also out was the other starting cornerback Philip Buchanon, so the Raiders were at a disadvantage from the start. But then they tried to cover Gonzalez with linebackers, including their hybrid defensive end-outside linebacker Tyler Brayton. That’s not ever going to work against a guy with Gonzalez’s ability, which is why he was over 100 yards receiving in the first half alone.

HERE COME THE RAIDERS

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for 2005 but understand this: Oakland will finish at best 6-10, which will give them a draft position somewhere in the top 10.

If the Raiders add a few talented players to what they already have, they are going to be a handful for everybody in the AFC West. They have gotten younger this year and taken their lumps, but they have offensive talent, with a young group of blockers and a stunning receiving group. Defensively, they have added some athletic players in recent seasons. They are solid at both kicking positions.

If Oakland finds a feature running back and some young interior defensive linemen this spring, they will not be under .500 very much longer.

The Value of Patience

Patience is such a wonderful virtue. It’s tough in today’s world of immediate gratification to take time to allow something to grow and develop. When it happens, it’s a wonderful thing to see.

However, patience is no guarantee of success, especially on the football field.Teams have waited and waited for a player to develop, and years later they are still waiting.

Both ends of the patience spectrum were visible Monday night here in Nashville in a Chiefs victory that will go down as one of the most unusual in team history. A Chiefs fan had to be patient just to watch this game that lasted three hours and 42 minutes. The Titans scored 10 points in 48 seconds to tie the score and take a three-point lead, with just 99 seconds to play.

The Chiefs came back and without any timeouts scored a pair of touchdowns in 24 seconds, one on offense, the other on defense, to earn their fifth victory of the season. The Chiefs gave up 542 yards to a Tennessee offense led not by Steve McNair, Eddie George and Frank Wycheck, but Billy Volek, Chris Brown and Drew Bennett. Defensively they were awful and wore out the patience of coordinator Gunther Cunningham.

Yet in the end, the defense made several plays in the closing minutes that allowed the Chiefs to win the game.

That brings us back to our subject: patience. At one end of that spectrum for the Chiefs is running back Larry Johnson. On the other is cornerback William Bartee.

Let’s start with Johnson. The first-round draft choice has been ridiculed, called names and forgotten during his two years in a Chiefs uniform; and that’s just by the head coach and his staff. There were times when Johnson did not say or do the right things, and there’s no doubt he pretty much pouted his way through his rookie season.

But Johnson returned for this season determined to handle things differently. There were setbacks a long the way and his name was part of trade rumors in October when the NFL deadline for deals came and went.

Johnson stayed and that was because of one man: Carl Peterson. He wasn’t ready to give up on the young running back from Penn State. Despite the problems, despite the fact his coaching staff did not trust Johnson and was in no hurry to get him on the field, Peterson did not want to throw away someone he considered a talented player.

That patience is paying off. Johnson has put together consecutive 100-yard rushing games. Last week in Oakland, he showed his ability to be a power back. In Tennessee, Johnson showed he can be a speed back, scoring on TD runs of 46 and 41 yards in the second half. It’s possible to see his confidence grow from game to game, carry to carry. All he needed was opportunity.

On the other end is Bartee, who after seemingly making some progress this season, has taken steps backward in the last two games. He looks lost on the field and was continuallybartee beaten by the Titans, whether it was Bennett or Derrick Mason. He eventually was sent to the bench and replaced by veteran CB Dexter McCleon.

Bartee is in his fifth season with the team and the coaching staff has shown tremendous patience in that time, waiting for him to develop into the kind of talent that’s drafted in the second round.

That patience is not paying off and it’s one reason the Chiefs pass defense is horrid. They are now allowing an average of 270 yards per game and in 13 games they’ve given up 27 TD passes.

The cornerback position is the No. 1 spot that must be retooled in the coming off-season. Bartee has worn out the patience of everyone. Second-year man Julian Battle has fallen so far in the estimation of the coaching staff that he did not play Monday night, not even on special teams. Dexter McCleon is not the every down answer at the position this late in his career.

When it comes to the Chiefs secondary, it’s important to have patience.

Another close lost

Strip away the great plays and the wild action and San Diego's 34-31 victory over Kansas City is reduced to a simple fact: big plays.

The revitalized Chargers (8-3) showed why they keep winning and the distraught Chiefs (3-8) showed why they continue to lose. San Diego made the big plays Sunday, got expert quarterbacking from Drew Brees and let tight end Antonio Gates and running back LaDainian Tomlinson carry most of the load.

The Chiefs gave up big plays, sustained costly penalties and turned the ball over at the worst possible time.

``Everybody got their money's worth today,'' said San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer, whose Chargers were a league-worst 4-12 last year. ``It was quite an exciting game.''

Nate Kaeding, set up by Donnie Edwards' interception of Trent Green's pass, made up for missing two field goals with a tiebreaking 43-yarder with 2:24 left.

A few minutes earlier, Brees' 11-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates tied it 31-31 and capped a 71-yard drive that saw the Chargers overcome four penalties, including one that nullified Antonio Gates' 51-yard gain. Making it possible was Kassim Osgood's 65-yard run-and-catch on second-and-22 from the Chargers 19.

``Kassim Osgood made what, in my mind, is as fine a play as I've seen in my entire career in football,'' Schottenheimer said.

Even more memorable for Chiefs fans was the Dante Hall show. The little return specialist, who took the NFL by storm last year when he returned five kicks for touchdowns, sped 77 yards with the second-half kickoff and was just a few steps from the end zone when the ball inexplicably popped out of his hands.

Jerrell Pippens recovered for San Diego on the 5, and a few minutes later Kaeding's 25-yarder tied it 17-17.

But in the fourth quarter, after Brees' 18-yard TD pass to Gates gave the Chargers a 24-23 lead, Hall took the ensuing kickoff, burst up and the middle and fled 96 yards to the end zone, tightly holding onto the ball all the way.

``The guys did a heck of a job blocking,'' said Hall. ``There were two or three ways I could have gone.''

He refused to make an excuse for dropping the ball on the first long return.

``I'm running and the ball came out of my hands,'' he said. ``Those things cannot happen when you're fighting to keep your playoff hopes alive.''

Kansas City seems headed for its worst season since 1988.

``Something's not right this year,'' said Chiefs tackle Willie Roaf. ``It's been going on all year.''

After Kaeding's 25-yarder tied it at 17, things started to get crazy.

Derrick Blaylock scooted 22 yards for a touchdown and a Kansas City lead that stayed at 23-17 when Lawrence Tynes missed the extra point.

Back came the Chargers, who have won five in a row and seven of eight, to forge a 23-23 tie when Gates beat backup safety Willie Pile on an 18-yard touchdown pass. Pile was playing in place of safety Greg Wesley, who injured his hamstring during pregame warmups.

``I think Willie Pile played pretty well overall,'' said Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil.

After Kaeding's extra point made it 24-23, Hall brought the crowd to its feet with his first touchdown return of the year, then Green hit Eddie Kennison for the 2-point conversion and the Chiefs led 31-24.

But helped by Osgood's big play, the Chargers tied it on Brees' 11-yard pass to Gates.

``Drew saw me open and he made a great throw,'' said Osgood.

Brees was 28-for-37 for 378 yards and two touchdowns and has thrown 18 touchdown passes and only one interception in his last eight games. Gates had seven catches for 92 yards and Tomlinson had 46 yards rushing and 57 yards on 10 receptions.

``Personally, I just feel more confident each time we go out and we win,'' said Brees. ``It just keeps giving me momentum.''

Tynes' 28-yard field goal with 45 seconds left gave the Chiefs a 17-14 halftime lead.

Tomlinson scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards in the first half.

Blaylock, starting for the injured Priest Holmes for the third straight game, scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Kansas City drove 94 yards in 13 plays capped by Larry Johnson's 6-yard run.

We once again lost with less than a 7 point difference. Green wasn't himself this game and it showed. He let his frustration get to his throwing and it led him to his lowest QB rating since the first couple of games this season. We could have beaten this team along with many others this year. We have shown that we can compete with these teams but we have never finished it. I hope we can turn it around, even if it does mean that we have little or no chance to make it to the playoffs. I would like to see us beat the rest of the teams this seasons. Lets get it togther to the finish of the season you guys!

Holmes out again for one of the most important games of the season.

Priest Holmes will likely miss next Monday night's game against the New England Patriots with sprained knee ligaments, the same injury that kept him out of Kansas City's loss to New Orleans on Sunday's loss to New Orleans.

``I would say he's out,'' Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said Monday. ``I think he's made a little progress, but he's got a long ways to go. I don't see him being any different than it was last week.''

Holmes, who leads the NFL in scoring with 90 points and ranks third in the AFC in rushing with 892 yards, injured his right knee against Tampa Bay on Nov. 7. While he sat out the 27-20 loss to the Saints, his replacement, Derrick Blaylock, ran for 186 yards.

Vermeil said he does not expect Holmes will need surgery.

``That has not been expressed to me,'' Vermeil said. ``Those sprains, they give them degrees, and everybody comes back at a different tempo. He always comes back quickly. But he's sprained that knee before so there's some other issues there as well.

``So we'll just be patient with him. We won't bring him back too fast, believe me.''

Kansas City is 3-6

Priest Holmes will not be playing in the game against the Patriots next Monday. It has become apparent to many of us that after winning 2 games, we lost 2 much easier games with him being out. This [Patriots] game will most likely be one of the defining games of the season. Lets hope for a speedy recovery for Mr. Holmes but more importantly, the win over the 8-1 Patriots. Lets rally it back Chiefs!

Important win over an important team

On a day dominated by offense, it took a defensive back to settle things.
Indianapolis star Peyton Manning had already thrown five touchdown passes when he lofted the ball into Kansas City's end zone with just under 2 minutes left Sunday. This time, the catch in the end zone belonged to Chiefs safety Greg Wesley, who returned the ball 65 yards to seal Kansas City's 45-35 victory.

``We didn't want it to have to happen that way,'' Wesley said. ``But they've got a powerful offense. We knew that coming in. We knew it wasn't going to be easy -- but the only thing that matters is that 'W.'

Kansas City's win broke a seven-game losing streak against the Colts (4-3), who didn't even have to punt in their 38-31 AFC divisional playoff victory over the Chiefs last season. Before Sunday, Kansas City (3-4) hadn't beaten Indianapolis since 1985 and had lost five straight to the Colts at Arrowhead Stadium.

So far this season, we have had some important wins, including the last. When we have lost, it has been by a small margin but if we want a chance this year, we will need to get the wins and stop settling for a close loss. I know that Holmes, the # 1 RB in the league, is good but we don't quite have the rest of the team to really back him up. We need to even out

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally got off to a fast start. They still needed another frantic finish.

Hobbled and hurting, Byron Leftwich directed a 67-yard touchdown drive and hit Cortez Hankton with 45 seconds remaining to lift the Jaguars to a 22-16 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Leftwich also threw another TD pass and ran for a score as the Jaguars (4-2) snapped a two-game losing streak and won in the final minute for the fourth time this season.

``Clearly he has some of the 'it' intangibles that make a great quarterback,'' Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. ``He showed it in college and brought it with him here.''

Leftwich certainly has shown he can win close games.

He now has led the Jags on late scoring drives in three victories this season. He connected with Ernest Wilford for a 7-yard score as time expired for a 13-10 victory over Buffalo in the opener. He also directed a 69-yard drive against Tennessee to give Jacksonville a 15-12 win.

This is not going to get easiar.

After the first 3 games, I have to admit, things aren't looking good. Things are just going to get harder from here on out and I definatley dont want a 0-4 start to the season or worse. We need to bring the pace back to last years pace and start getting some wins in. Or else if we don't, we'll be out of the race before crossing the 1/2 way point. Lets get a win and go from there.

Unless we can pull off a win against the Texans who are also struggling, its going to be hard to get a winning season. Even though it is possible, the chances of a team going 0-3 in the first 3 games and then winning a Superbowl is not very good. As the injuries continue to pile up, we will have to fight just as hard to make up for that player. Lets get our first step to redeeming ourselves. Go Chiefs!

Dissappointment in the season opener

``They screwed us up with a lot of the different things they did,'' Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said. ``A little different than what they've ever done and it screwed us up.''

It seems as if they ran all over us in the opener with a score of 24-34. It was more than embarassing, and we need to improve on alot of things. Priest Holmes on the other hand played fantastically, but our defense couldnt hold back the Broncos and you all know what happened after that. We need learn our weaknesses before we get better and I dont think we accomplished that too well in Pre-season. We need to get abck in this or else it will be too late in the season. Now lets get out there and win some games!

Last night was a mess. We had a 5 point lead going into the last 4 minutes, and the Browns managed to pull off an amazing drive. Although we lost, we played a game that was down to the wire and even worse we lost Marc Boerigter while he was running a route and he turned to sharp. It is one thing to loose in a game that is basically seeing what a team has, but getting injuries is that last thing they want to do, especially if you dont have any secondaries that can fill a place. Lets hope they can get him healed up quick or find a replacement quick. GO Chiefs!

Preseason games begin

With a loss to the Giants and rookie Eli Manning, we saw a lot of things that could be improved and I hope that the Chiefs took this last week to do so. 2 days from now, they will play the Rams in the 2nd pre-season game and if our Chiefs dont want a loosing streak, they need to play hard. Lets get out thier and cheer our Chiefs on!
